According to Liverpool team-mate Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk would currently be awarded the title of Player of the Year, as he is considered to be the most exceptional center-back globally.
Van Dijk, who holds the title of the world’s priciest defender since his transfer to Anfield in 2018, is currently the frontrunner for the award, surpassing other potential candidates including Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho, as well as Tottenham’s Heung-Min Son.
Since the establishment of the Professional Footballers’ Association awards in 1974, the primary prize has been won by a defender only five times. The most recent defender to win this accolade was John Terry, who achieved this feat 14 years ago.
Van Dijk has played a crucial role in Liverpool’s pursuit of the title, contributing to the team’s impressive record of 16 clean sheets this season. Robertson provided some valuable information on the matter.
“If the season were to end tonight, I would personally award it to him,” stated the Scotland captain, who is also having a successful season in Liverpool’s defensive line.
John Terry was the most recent defender to receive the prestigious PFA Players’ Player of the Year award. However, with 10 games remaining, it is possible for another player from a different team to emerge as a strong contender. Nevertheless, I believe that Virgil van Dijk has the potential to elevate his performance to an entirely new level.
“Typically, the attacking players receive the most attention and recognition due to their goal-scoring abilities and media coverage. However, this season Virgil has been exceptional, and he is rightfully receiving all the praise and recognition he deserves.”
“I believe his attention will be directed towards the team rather than that.” Receiving end-of-season accolades is always pleasant, and I am confident that he will be a strong contender for them. The outcome will be uncertain if he fails to win it.
“He exhibits a remarkable level of consistency.” If he continues to provide performances at the same level of excellence, there is no justification for him not to receive the trophy.
“Undoubtedly, he simplifies my life.” Having him by my side greatly simplifies everything.
When a someone is approaching you and you are aware that Virgil is present, it is highly unlikely for him to be out of place, if ever.
“In my opinion, he is currently the most exceptional center-back in the world.” That is the manner in which he is currently performing and the level of self-assurance he possesses – and considering his youth, there is still room for further improvement.
Van Dijk further enhanced his exceptional performance this season by scoring two goals in Liverpool’s decisive victory against Watford. However, it is surprising that he has only scored four goals in 56 matches for the Reds, considering his commanding presence in his own penalty area as a highly skilled Netherlands international.
“He consistently demonstrates diligent effort on a daily basis,” Robertson stated. “Arguably, the sole letdown for him is his insufficient contribution in terms of goals.”
“Despite his small stature, he poses a threаt in both penalty areas and scored two exceptional goals with his head. However, his most significant contribution was his solid defensive performance.”
“He and Joel Matip performed exceptionally well in maintaining a clean sheet despite Watford’s several counter-attacks, which they effectively dealt with. It was a challenging assignment, especially against Troy Deeney.”
“Although there were not many individuals who bullied him, I observed that Virgil exerted complete control over him throughout the entire game.”
