Shakira made history at the 40th edition of the MTV Video Music Awards by becoming the first South American artist to receive the “Video Vanguard Award,” one of the highest honors at the MTV awards.
This year, the Colombian singer received four nominations for the VMAs, one for “Best Collaboration,” two for “Best Latin Song” (one for “TQG” and another for “Acróstico”), and one for “Artist of the Year.”
Before accepting the award, Shakira performed a 10-minute medley featuring some of her greatest hits from her over three-decade-long career. The medley included songs like “She Wolf,” “Te Felicito,” “Whenever, Wherever,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” and her recent “Music Sessions Vol. 53” with Bizarrap.
In her acceptance speech, the singer of “Pies Descalzos” thanked her children, parents, and industry collaborators for their support. She concluded her speech by dedicating the award to her fans.
“This is for you, my Latin American people, inside and outside of this country: thank you for inspiring me, giving me strength, and the will to keep going.”
