A statue made of bronze has been revealed in Barranquilla, Colombia, the hometown of renowned singer Shakira. The statue, standing at 21 feet tall, showcases her famous belly-dancing pose. It is situated in a park along the Magdalena River and was unveiled in the presence of Shakira’s parents. However, the online community noticed an error in the spelling of the sculptor’s name on the plaque, which sparked attention.
The inscription on the statue’s plaque describes Shakira as someone born on January 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, who has shared her heart, truthful hips, unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses, and bare feet that advocate for the well-being of children and humanity. The sculpture captures Shakira’s iconic belly dance, with a height of 6.50 meters, crafted from bronze. The aluminum end of her skirt symbolizes the waves of the sea and the river.
The description further explains that the raised arms and interlocked hands of the statue represent the concept of transcendence. The artwork was created by Yino Marques, an artist from the La Paz neighborhood, with the support of students and graduates from the District School of Arts. The names of Jaime Pumarejo Heins and Yino Marquez are mentioned below the description.
Shakira’s fans and supporters expressed confusion over the inconsistent spelling of the sculptor’s last name.
“Can someone please clarify if the artist’s last name is spelled with an S or a Z?” asked one user.
Another added, “I appreciate the tribute, but this mistake is quite distracting.”
“This kind of error really bothers me,” commented another user.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jaime Pumarejo emphasized that the sculpture “inspires millions of girls, showing them that they can pursue their dreams and achieve whatever they want.” He recalled observing Shakira perform at local children’s concerts.
Shakira, who currently resides in Miami, expressed her gratitude for the statue through a statement issued by the mayor’s office, affirming that Barranquilla will always be her home. In 2023, the singer had a successful year, winning three Latin Grammy awards, one of which she shared with fellow Colombian musician Karol G.
