Tiffany Haddish seemed determined to hang out with singer Shakira after the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday, but her efforts didn’t quite go as planned.
In a video captured backstage by NowWutDotCom Instagram, the 43-year-old actress and stand-up comedian was seen enthusiastically calling out to the 46-year-old Colombian singer as she navigated through a crowded room.
“Shakira! Shakira!” Haddish repeatedly yelled, attempting to catch Shakira’s attention, who was busy taking selfies. Despite being just a few feet away from the singer, Shakira didn’t turn in Haddish’s direction.
Undeterred, Haddish continued to call out Shakira’s name and even photobombed one of her selfies when the opportunity arose. As Shakira moved through the party, Haddish trailed closely behind, still calling out her name.
This wasn’t the first time Haddish photobombed Shakira during the awards show. She also surprised Latinx singer Karol G by sneaking up behind her while she was posing with Shakira.
Eventually, Shakira did pose with Haddish on the backstage red carpet area, although one photo appears to show Haddish abruptly entering Shakira’s shot as she held her two VMAs.
Shakira had a successful night, winning Best Collaboration with Karol G for “TQG” and the Video Vanguard Award. Haddish was present at the event to present the Best Afrobeats award, which was won by Rema and Selena Gomez for “Calm Down.”
Haddish made headlines the previous month after admitting to purchasing a wedding dress despite not having immediate plans to get married. She praised the dress’s beauty and revealed plans to dye it a purplish-blue color, though she admitted she paid someone else to do it for her.
Despite her excitement for the dress, Haddish shared that she often gives away designs she isn’t in love with to foster youth in need of clothing, highlighting her generosity and practical approach to fashion.
